An Honest Review of Ranbir Kapoor’s Latest Animal

Animal Movie

Overview:

Rating: 8.5/10

Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, known for his masterful storytelling in "Kabir Singh," once again takes the reins, steering "Animal" into a world of moral ambiguity, power play, and unyielding loyalty. With a runtime of 201 minutes (3 hours 21 minutes), the film was one of the longest Indian films made.

At the heart of this narrative is Ranbir Kapoor, who effortlessly slips into the skin of a character that exudes charisma and complexity. His portrayal promises to be a force, showcasing Kapoor's nuanced acting prowess. The tale is of familial bonds and the dark underbelly of society, woven intricately with shades of grey that challenge the conventional definitions of heroism and villainy. The ensemble cast, including Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Bobby Deol, adds further depth to the storytelling canvas. The visuals are striking, painting a canvas of a world where power dynamics dictate every move. The director's signature style of blending raw emotions with gritty realism seems set to evoke a range of emotions, from empathy to introspection.

With a haunting background score and dialogues that resonate long after they are uttered, "Animal" appears to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats, yearning for more.Animal takes you through an intense, violent, and graphic journey, but you kind of get used to it and stay engaged in the story. However, whenever the main character does something, it can leave you feeling confused. He's like a hero, but not exactly a good guy. Ranvijay Singh, “Vijay played by Ranbir Kapoor, really looks up to and admires his dad, Balbir Singh, played by Anil Kapoor. He spends a lot of his childhood trying to get his dad's love and attention, but it never really works out. So, from a young age, he has problems with his dad, and it affects a lot of how he grows up.

Plus points :

  • It's hard to imagine any other actor besides Ranbir in 'Animal'. He truly shines brightly in this role. The protagonist's character is quite wild and demands a lot of conviction to pull off, and Ranbir nails it. His performance is top-notch. Even if you weren't a fan before, you might just become one after witnessing his exceptional acting, especially in that intense conversation scene at the end.
  • The first part of the movie is gripping. Despite being quite long, the initial hour keeps us engaged. The character growth, action scenes, and intense moments all work well. The interval scene is the highlight, shot amazingly well, and the background music adds a lot to the mood.
  • Rashmika Mandanna does her part well, and her chemistry with Ranbir is fantastic. The songs are great, and the lyrics are well-written. Anil Kapoor, Tripthi Dimri, Suresh Oberoi, Siddharth Karnick, and the rest of the cast also did a commendable job.
  • The comedic timing of the punchlines in the movie is near perfect and can feel like a relief during some of the most intense scenes.

Drawbacks:

  • Similar to 'Arjun Reddy' and 'Kabir Singh', 'Animal' also has many intense and daring scenes. In 'Animal', Sandeep Reddy Vanga pushes the limits even further, which might surprise a lot of people. Several moments in the movie will spark discussions.
  • Ranbir's character has a lot of complexity, leading to some unusual behavior in the latter part of the film. The title 'Animal' truly reflects the protagonist's psyche, something not commonly explored in mainstream cinema. However, these changes in tone might not resonate with everyone, especially since certain parts in the second half might not connect with the broader audience.
  • While Sandeep Reddy Vanga delves deeply into Ranbir's character, the same attention isn't given to Bobby Deol's role. His character feels incomplete, and as a result, the climax doesn't have the impact it could have had.
