Doha Film Institute
The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has recently announced the launch of an educational initiative specifically designed for young film enthusiasts residing in Qatar – the Ajyal Film Club.
As per the institute's website, the club offers an exclusive opportunity for members to engage with international films and participate in various enriching activities, workshops, and masterclasses over a six-month period. Interested individuals can now sign up at dohafilminstitute.com.
Tailored for different age groups, the program is divided into three categories: Mohaq (8 to 12 years old), Hilal (13 to 17 years old), and Bader (18 to 25 years old). Members of the Ajyal Film Club can look forward to exclusive benefits that will enhance their cinematic experience, with details being revealed upon becoming a member, according to DFI.
All sessions will take place at the Auditorium of the Museum of Islamic Art.
The inclusive Ajyal Film Club extends a warm invitation to both local residents and those aged 8 to 25, assigning participants to sections based on their age during the first program session. The program, scheduled from January to June this year, will have monthly gatherings for each age group.
Session timings are staggered for each category: Mohaq (Thursdays, 4 pm to 7 pm), Hilal (Fridays, 3 pm to 7 pm), and Bader (Saturdays, 3 pm to 7 pm).
Over the six-month duration, each section will have six three-hour sessions. Members will have the opportunity to watch globally acclaimed feature-length films and short selections, interact with internationally renowned guests, and participate in creative activities revolving around diverse film themes for Mohaq members. On the other hand, Hilal and Bader sections will engage in masterclasses covering filmmaking techniques and film language.
In addition, DFI has announced its monthly lecture series, "Watching the Classics – ‘Making Movies Modern,’ which is scheduled for January 15. Presented by renowned scholar Richard Peña, Professor of Film Studies at Columbia University and Director Emeritus of the New York Film Festival, this series focuses on undisputed world cinema classics.Â
The featured film for this month is "Mirror" by Andrei Tarkovsky, marking the final session of the nine-part series. The lecture fee is QR50, and interested individuals can register through the institute's website.
