The FIA has mandated that all drivers make at least three pit stops during the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix due to safety concerns over tyre wear. Analysis by Pirelli revealed potential issues with tyre durability, particularly due to the high-frequency interference between the tyre sidewall and the 50mm 'pyramid' kerbs at the Losail International Circuit. This interference was exacerbated by the tendency of drivers to ride these kerbs extensively.

To mitigate the risk of tyre failures, the FIA has implemented a maximum limit of 18 full laps per stint, necessitating at least three pit stops in the 57-lap race. Additionally, any car exceeding the tyre-lap limits will be reported to the stewards for operating in an unsafe condition.

The decision follows concerns raised after Friday's practice session and further analysis from Saturday's 19-lap Sprint, which was interrupted by three Safety Car periods, limiting the data available for assessment. Despite changes to track limits at Turns 12 and 13, the potential danger of long stints remained, leading to the enforcement of this precautionary measure.
