Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, has pledged to take measures to safeguard drivers’ health after several reported severe physical distress during Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix.

Cockpit temperatures reached close to 50°C (122°F) at the Lusail International Circuit, Mercedes driver George Russell told Sky Sports. According to Reuters, tyre supplier Pirelli confirmed that track temperatures never dropped below 36°C (96.8°F) throughout the night race.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon revealed he vomited in his helmet mid-race, describing the conditions as “like a sauna.” Williams rookie Logan Sargeant was forced to retire on Lap 41 due to extreme dehydration, worsened by flu-like symptoms, his team said.

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll admitted he had been “passing out in the car,” while both he and Williams’ Alex Albon needed assistance to exit their cars after the finish.

Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, summed it up bluntly: it was “by far the most physical race I’ve ever competed in.
