H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani
Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani left London yesterday and headed to New York City to participate in the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77) at the organisation’s headquarters in the US.
The Amir will deliver a speech at the opening session of the General Assembly today (Tuesday). An official delegation is accompanying the Amir.
Meanwhile, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, has stressed that participation of H H the Amir in the 77th session of the UN General Assembly reflects the commitment of the State of Qatar to the United Nations and its keenness on achieving the goals of the international organisation.
Speaking to QNA, he said Qatar has long participated in the meetings of the United Nations with the highest levels of representation, which helped demonstrate over the years the role the State plays and the support it provides to the UN. This is in terms of financing, development support or assistance to least developed countries.
He highlighted “the critical political role that Qatar has played on the issue of Afghanistan, or on issues less visible sometimes like Chad, or the bridge builder between Iran and the West as a geographical and diplomatic bridge builder. Qatar has really played a central role for us at the United Nations.”
Earlier in an interview, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN H E Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani said H H the Amir's speech at the opening session of the General Assembly has always been of great interest to world leaders, heads of delegations, and representatives of the UN and influential international organisations.
She said the Amir will focus in his speech on issues of the Arab region, led by the Palestine issue, in addition to the situation in Syria, Libya, and Yemen.
“H H the Amir’s speech will also focus on several international issues related to developmental and humanitarian issues. There will also be a main focus on Qatar’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in November as a global event that attracts great international attention,” she said.
The ambassador said the Amir’s speech will also address the future of the UN and what it should do during the coming period, in addition to several other issues such as the future of multilateralism, the significant role of promoting developmental and humanitarian issues, as well as the conflict and mediation issue.
