HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE DUST STORMS IN QATAR
The Qatar Calendar House announced the beginning of the 39-day ‘Al Kannah’ season, marking the end of the moderate weather as the summer heat during the day begins. It is also expected that the country will experience frequent weather fluctuations and dust storms halfway into the season.
Dust storms tend to have adverse effects on health, especially on those who are already suffering from breathing difficulties and respiratory problems. Today, on World Asthma Day we would like to bring special attention to the individuals suffering with Asthma about how to protect themselves when dust storms are forecasted in their area.
Asthma is a condition where breathing difficulties occur as the air passage of the lungs becomes narrow and swells. Dust particles can be one of the major triggering agents that can lead to asthma attack due to irritation in the lungs. Stress due to weather changes also causes anxiety that triggers asthma attack. It must be kept in mind that the probability of the consequences increases with exposure to dust storms for a longer time. Children and elderly are more prone to the risk.
There are several precaution that needs to be taken in the event of a Dust storm:
• Minimum exposure. Stay indoors as much as possible with all doors and windows closed.
• If going outside is unavoidable, use a mask to cover your nose and mouth.
• Stay in air conditioned premises.
• Avoid vigorous exercises.
• If you’re an Asthma patient, carry your reliever inhaler with you at all times
In case of symptoms like difficulty in breathing, coughing, wheezing, or chest pain use prescribed medication. If the symptoms still exist seek immediate medical attention.
Remember prevention is better than cure.
