Qatar Aviation Services (QAS), in collaboration with MATAR and Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), a member of Qatar Foundation, has launched a groundbreaking trial of autonomous transportation solutions at Hamad International Airport (DOH). This marks a regional first in integrating advanced autonomous vehicles into airside operations.
The proof-of-concept trials, which began on February 16, include an autonomous staff bus and a baggage tractor equipped with AI-driven systems, GPS, intelligent sensors, and lidars. Designed for 24/7 operation under various weather conditions, these vehicles enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability with real-time monitoring and automated charging capabilities.
Hamad Ali Al Khater, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, highlighted the airport’s commitment to innovation, stating: “This initiative reflects our dedication to efficiency, safety, and sustainability, positioning us at the forefront of technological advancement in aviation.”
Murat Nursel, Senior Vice President at QAS, emphasized the company’s vision for innovation and operational excellence: “By testing autonomous vehicles with MATAR and QSTP, we are reinforcing our commitment to supporting Qatar’s national vision and enhancing operational efficiency.”
Dr. Jack Lau, President of QSTP, underscored the significance of this initiative: “The Level 4 autonomous vehicle solutions being trialed at Hamad International Airport showcase our dedication to technological advancement and smart mobility. This initiative aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, fostering a sustainable and tech-driven economy.”
This initiative aims to optimize processes by minimizing manual interventions, laying the groundwork for expanding Qatar’s autonomous transportation framework. If successful, the trial will contribute to the future integration of autonomous fleets across Qatar’s transport infrastructure.
