WASHINGTON - Indian-origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon embarked on his maiden journey into space on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, lifting off aboard Russia's Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for an eight-month scientific mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
The Soyuz spacecraft blasted off at 8:17 PM IST, carrying Menon along with Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina. After a two-orbit, roughly three-hour journey, the spacecraft was scheduled to automatically dock with the station's Prichal module, marking the beginning of Expedition 75. The mission is Menon's first spaceflight and the second for both Russian cosmonauts. The crew is scheduled to return to Earth in April 2027.
A Multicultural Background
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to immigrant parents, Menon, 49, has Indian and Ukrainian heritage. His father, K.P. Shankaran Menon, hails from Ottapalam in Kerala's Palakkad district, while his mother, Elizabeth Samoylenko, is from Ukraine. His journey to the ISS has been celebrated as a landmark achievement in Kerala, with the state's chief minister terming it a "truly historic milestone." Menon is married to Anna Menon, and the couple has two children.
A Career Spanning Medicine, Military and Space
Menon brings an accomplished and varied background to the mission, spanning medicine, engineering, military service, and spaceflight. An emergency medicine physician and a U.S. Space Force colonel, he served on the frontlines in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom during his time with the U.S. Air Force, and also worked with the Himalayan Rescue Association, caring for climbers on Mount Everest. He additionally spent a year in India as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, studying and supporting polio vaccination initiatives.
Menon began his career at NASA as a flight surgeon in 2014, supporting astronauts living and working aboard the ISS, and lived and worked in Star City, Russia, for more than six months. In 2018, he joined SpaceX, where he established the company's medical program, helped prepare for its first human spaceflights, and contributed to the development of Starship, the super-heavy rocket and spacecraft designed for future missions to the Moon and Mars. He was selected as a NASA astronaut in December 2021 and completed two years of initial astronaut training.
The Menons are something of a trailblazing space couple: his wife Anna traveled to space in September 2024 as part of Polaris Dawn, a private crewed spaceflight operated by SpaceX that lasted nearly five days.
Research Aboard the Station
During the mission, Menon will "conduct scientific research and technology demonstrations aimed at advancing human space exploration and benefiting life on Earth," according to NASA. Much of his work will focus on understanding how prolonged exposure to microgravity affects the human body, including how it influences blood flow and other physiological systems during long-duration spaceflight.
Among the standout experiments, Menon will participate in testing the production of intravenous (IV) fluids using the ISS's potable water system - an innovation considered vital for future crewed missions to the Moon and Mars, where medical resources will be scarce. He will also support advanced medical demonstrations, including ultrasound procedures assisted by augmented reality and artificial intelligence, technologies expected to enhance healthcare capabilities during deep-space exploration. The findings are expected to help shape NASA's future Artemis missions to the Moon and eventual human expeditions to Mars.
Joining the Station Crew
Once aboard, Menon, Dubrov, and Kikina will join a multinational crew already living on the station, including NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Sergei Mikaev, and Andrey Fedyaev. Menon's maiden voyage represents another landmark achievement for the Indian-origin scientific community in global space exploration.
