A dramatic volcanic eruption in eastern Indonesia has forced the cancellation of dozens of flights to and from Bali, as Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki sent a massive column of ash more than 11 kilometers into the sky late Tuesday.
Located on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara province, the volcano erupted with such force that Indonesia’s Geological Agency raised the alert status to its highest level. A second eruption early Wednesday generated a smaller ash plume, but tremors and volcanic activity continued, according to Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB).
No injuries or casualties have been reported so far, but several villages near the volcano were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Authorities have urged residents and tourists to stay at least 7 kilometers away from the crater.
The eruption’s ash cloud disrupted travel plans across the region. At least 32 flights, including international routes from Australia, India, and Singapore, were canceled at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport. Affected airlines include Singapore Airlines, AirAsia, and Jetstar, which announced delays and rescheduling of services for later in the evening, pending clearer skies.
Domestically, flights to Labuan Bajo—a key tourist destination near the volcano—were also grounded. Indonesia’s AirNav temporarily closed Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere until Thursday to ensure passenger safety.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki last erupted in November, resulting in nine fatalities and the evacuation of thousands. Sitting along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Indonesia is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, making such activity a persistent risk in the region.
Stay tuned for updates as authorities continue to monitor the situation and flight operations gradually resume.
