Class 5th is the last step of primary school. Here students are prepared for going to middle school. Students will be tested for the fundamental concepts they learned through lower primary schools. In Class 5th there are only 4 subjects. The syllabus is designed as such that students are taught through fun activities. Here the aim is to create interest in students about subjects.   

Math is one of the four subjects in Class 5. It is one of the crucial subjects as it is going to be important for forthcoming standards. Hence, students must develop a technique for studying math from this standard and follow it through their academic life. Always remember before starting to study that to know the syllabus for the subject, gather textbooks and other study resources and solve sample papers. These are the three fundamentals for preparing for any exam. No matter what exam it will be, these three will always be part of any study plan. The syllabus for Class 5th Maths  

NCERT textbook “Math-Magic '' is specifically designed for the CBSE Class 5th Maths. The CBSE board has authorized the NCERT textbook “Math-Magic'' for Class 5th math. Class 5th math continues the format of giving fun activities in explaining concepts. The language of this textbook is simple. With appropriate use of pictures and diagrams, the NCERT textbook is quite lucid. There are a total of 14 chapters in the textbook. All chapters are to develop the critical and analytical thinking of the students. The first chapter is ‘The Fish Tale’ which is a unique approach to math. It is a thematic chapter that walks students through the world of fish and fish markets. It explains mathematical concepts like shapes, sizes, loans, simple mathematical operations, etc. Through real-life contexts. Similarly, other chapters explain mathematical concepts by drawing parallels to real life. Other chapters are also explained similarly.  

Students can easily cover the syllabus for the exam in a short amount of time. From Class 5th students can participate in competitive exams like Olympiads. For Math Olympiad, all the concepts are similar to the Class 5th Maths syllabus but the questions are at an advanced level. With some other books and practicing questions for every topic, every student can achieve success in these exams. By preparing for these exams students will gain confidence. Revision of concepts   

Revision of concepts is an important part of studying. There are 14-20 concepts in the textbook and once you have learned the concept you may forget what you have learned when you learn another concept if you have not revised the first concept. Hence chapter-based revision holds much importance in studying. Students must revise weekly. Before learning a new concept make sure that they have properly learned previous concepts and they do remember the crucial keywords and formulas from previous chapters.

Sample papers are important to analyze the status of preparation. Students do not try to practice similar types of questions once they have solved that one type of question. Hence students do not have enough practice to solve those questions, making them lose marks in the exam. Sample paper solving will make students realize where they are lacking and will give them time to revise on those sections and practice questions related to that section. Sample papers also make students realize which type of questions they are getting wrong. Many times, students make mistakes in objective questions by getting perplexed in choosing the right option or they lose the marks for not writing proper solutions for the questions. After solving sample papers, students will find out which type of questions are their weaknesses. Students must work on it by solving that type of question on different concepts. Sample papers will give direction to the study plan. Without solving sample papers, students are wasting their time and efforts.  

Things to keep in mind during preparation 

Many students can make a perfect study plan but while executing it they make common mistakes. Which can affect their final marks. Hence to get a high score in the exam, students must keep the following things in mind before preparing for the Class 5th Maths exam -  

1. Always follow the syllabus. Always go through the NCERT textbook for the Class 5th NCERT textbook. Students may feel to follow other sources to study for the CBSE exam but remember that the CBSE exam is based on the syllabus prescribed by the CBSE board. Most questions from the exam are based on the NCERT textbook hence learn thoroughly from the NCERT textbook.  

2. It is always beneficial to practice more questions. Many question banks are easily available online and offline. Use these question banks to solve as many questions as you can. Solve exercise questions. Do not skip any questions from the exercises of the textbook.  

3. Make a habit of making notes. This habit will be beneficial for the forthcoming academic years. Make short notes on each chapter. Make them to the point that it is easy to revise them a few minutes before the exam. Also, use these notes in your daily study and weekly revision.  

4. Students should set their goals to understand every concept completely. In this way, students can learn from studying. Preparing for the subject in this way will be fruitful for many years.
