The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has identified a case of illegal diesel discharge into Qatari waters by a fishing vessel, thanks to advanced drone monitoring conducted by its Marine Protection Department.
The vessel, known locally as a lanj, was found to have leaked fuel into the sea due to improper handling of a diesel leak within its engine compartment. The MECC confirmed that the spill was localized and did not result in widespread contamination or long-term harm to the marine environment.
In response, legal measures have been taken against the violator under Qatar’s environmental protection laws.
The ministry reaffirmed its strong stance on safeguarding marine ecosystems and urged all vessel operators to comply with fuel handling and waste management protocols to avoid similar incidents.
