Ministry of Municipality offers Recyclable materials at no charge to enhance the circular economy

Recycling centers across Qatar are receiving free recyclable materials from the Ministry of Municipality (MoM)

The Ministry of Municipality (MoM) in Qatar is supplying recyclable materials without charge to recycling facilities in the country, with the aim of advancing recycling practices and fostering sustainability and a circular economy, as per an official statement.

“This is one of the initiatives of the ministry aimed at making economic benefits and cutting the carbon footprint to meet the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030,” said Assistant Director of the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department at the Ministry of Municipality Hassan Al Nasr.

Speaking to Qatar TV recently, he emphasized that recycling holds significant importance for the country.

“The Waste Management Centre run by the department treats 2,300 tonnes wastes daily. The centre segregates wastes for recyclable materials, and converts the remaining into fertilisers and green energy (electricity),” said Al Nasr.

He mentioned that the recyclable materials from the center are sent to recycling facilities located in Al Afjah for Recycling Industries.

“The factories are recycling almost all types of recyclable wastes including electronics, batteries, cables, plastics, and papers among others,” said Al Nasr.  He stated that the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department supplies recyclable materials, including plastics, tires, and papers, to recycling factories in Al Afjah at no cost.

“There are dedicated factories for recycling chemical materials, oil and batteries, which adhere to international standards,” said Al Nasr.

He mentioned that the ministry has implemented several recycling initiatives, including the separation of waste at its source at Hamad International Airport (HIA). “There is another initiative to set up a number of waste transfer stations for sorting waste,” said Al Nasr.

Situated in Mesaieed Industrial Area, roughly 40 kilometers south of Doha, Al Ajfa is being developed as a focal point for the recycling industry to fulfill Qatar's ambitious objectives in sustainability and the circular economy.

More than twelve recycling facilities are currently operational in the Al Afja region, with approximately seven additional factories expected to commence operations soon. A total of 12 factories are currently in the construction phase.

The allocated land plots in Al Afja number 252, with 53 plots specifically designated for recycling facilities.

Qatar established the Al Afja area for recycling industries to facilitate collaboration between the government and private sectors.

Permissible activities in Al Afja encompass the recycling of oil, medical waste, wood, metal, electronic items, plastic, tires, batteries, as well as the segregation and recycling of construction waste.
