Economic Empowerment Project in The Gambia
Qatar Charity, in collaboration with The Gambia National Disaster Management Agency, held a ceremony in Banjul, the capital, to distribute the products of the second phase of its economic and development empowerment project.
The second phase of the project included the distribution of 130 three-wheeled vehicles, 130 passenger "tuk-tuks", and 100 diesel-powered grain mills. These resources aim to boost job opportunities for youth and support women's cooperatives in rural areas, in line with the national development strategy and the YIRIWA program, which focuses on improving livelihoods and driving economic growth. The ceremony also featured the distribution of school bags and stationery to orphans to support education and promote social solidarity.
During the ceremony held to mark the occasion, HE President of the Republic of The Gambia Adama Barrow expressed his deep appreciation for Qatar Charity's support, describing the initiative as "a true embodiment of international solidarity." The event was attended by HE Deputy Ambassador of the State of Qatar Abdulla Al Kaabi, and Advisor to the CEO of Qatar Charity Jassim Abdullah Al Jassim, along with senior Gambian government officials and representatives of local and international organizations.
His Excellency noted that the initiative represents vital support for the government's efforts to build a more resilient society and will open new horizons for providing job opportunities for youth, enhancing women's participation in economic activities, and strengthening rural cooperatives to achieve local development. He commended the prominent role played by Qatar Charity in empowering economically vulnerable groups by providing them with income-generating projects.
For his part, Jassim Abdullah Al Jassim affirmed that the initiative reflects Qatar Charity's commitment to supporting The Gambia's sustainable development goals. He explained that the first phase of the project included the distribution of essential equipment in health, education, and livelihood improvement, such as blood pressure monitors, water purification tools, school desks, sewing machines, solar lamps, and relief kits.
He added that since 2019, Qatar Charity has implemented development projects in The Gambia worth approximately USD 5 million, covering health, education, water, orphan sponsorship, and income-generating initiatives, underscoring the strong humanitarian partnership between Qatar and The Gambia.
Last month, Qatar Charity signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Gambia's Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare to strengthen cooperation in social protection, economic empowerment, and improving the quality of life for vulnerable groups.
