Qatar Foundationâs (QF) Creating Pathways Programme is expanding to include fencing, aiming to nurture sporting talent among Qatari girls aged 12-16. This initiative, launched as part of QFâs FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 legacy, promotes sports, fitness, and overall well-being.
The fencing track, developed in collaboration with the Qatar Fencing Federation, joins track and field and volleyball as part of the programme. Olympic medallist Ibtihaj Muhammad, an advocate for diversity in sports, serves as the programme's ambassador.
The initiative was announced during an exhibition at Education City Stadium, where Ibtihaj Muhammad and Tunisian Olympic medallist Inès Boubakri, head coach at Qatar Fencing Federation, refereed matches featuring top female fencers. The event not only showcased the athletesâ skills but also educated attendees about fencing techniques and rules.
âI hope this programme empowers girls to believe in themselves, compete internationally, and become leaders in their communities,â said Ibtihaj Muhammad, who has been recognized among Time Magazineâs 100 Most Influential People.
Liz McColgan, QFâs Director of Athletics Programmes, emphasized the impact of sports in building confidence and fostering community among young women.
Following the exhibition, both Ibtihaj Muhammad and Inès Boubakri participated in QFâs Ladies Night, a dedicated sports and fitness event at Education City Stadium.
