World Population Day

The State of Qatar celebrated World Population Day, observed on July 11 every year, with the aim of reminding all segments of society of population issues and their importance, in addition to enhancing community awareness about it, highlighting issues of family planning, gender equality, combating poverty, improving maternal health, and human rights.

HE the President of the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) and Chairman of the Permanent Population Committee (PCC) Dr. Saleh bin Mohamed Al Nabit affirmed that the main goal of the population policy in the State of Qatar is to achieve a balance between population growth and the requirements of sustainable development in a way that guarantees a decent life for the residents of the State of Qatar, improves their capabilities, expands their options, and raises the levels of their participation in the progress and elevation of the Qatari society.

In the same context, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Natalia Kanem stressed in a statement on this occasion that "This World Population Day is a reminder that we can achieve the prosperous, peaceful and sustainable future envisioned by the International Conference on Population and Development and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development if we harness the power of every human being on the planet. When we unlock the full potential of women and girls - encouraging and nurturing their desires for their lives, their families and their careers - we galvanize half the leadership, ideas, innovation, and creativity to better society." The interest of the State of Qatar in population issues stems from its project and continuous approach to building an advanced society based on the principle of respect for human rights and the continuous improvement of the standard of living of its citizens and residents. This interest was embodied in the Qatar National Vision 2030, which was launched in 2008.

The World Population Day, approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989, is an annual opportunity that allows the inhabitants of the globe to hold public meetings, exhibitions and public awareness campaigns with the aim of focusing attention on one of the population issues in the context of comprehensive development and its programs and the need to find solutions to these issues.
