Qatar Renews its Support for Education of Girls and Children in Afghanistan

The State of Qatar has renewed its support for education in Afghanistan, especially the education of children and girls, warning against impeding girls' education, which would have negative effects on human rights, sustainable development and the economy in Afghanistan.

This came in a speech by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, in front of the side event held by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on the sidelines of the 20th Doha Forum, entitled "Acknowledgment of the generous support provided by the State of Qatar and its partners to refugee children of Afghanistan in Qatar and everywhere", which was organized by the Executive Director of UNICEF Catherine Russell, and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham.

Her Excellency Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, keynote speaker at the side event, said that supporting children and youth in Afghanistan is indeed a critical priority for the State of Qatar,

Her Excellency referred to the Education Above All Foundation, which strives with international organizations such as UNICEF to provide quality primary education for millions of children, which helps break down barriers that prevent children from attending school, and to ensure that every child has the opportunity to have a quality education.

Her Excellency expressed Qatar's deep concern about the obstruction of children and young people's access to education in Afghanistan, especially girls.

Her Excellency pointed to the great efforts made by the State of Qatar to ensure the education of children and girls, through talks with the interim government in Afghanistan, and the offer to provide technical and material support to the education sector.

Her Excellency renewed the State of Qatar's call for the interim government in Afghanistan to support the right of girls and women to education, and said that impeding girls' education will result in negative effects on human rights, sustainable development and the economy in Afghanistan.

Her Excellency commended the efforts and assistance provided by the State of Qatar, which helped to evacuate hundreds of children from Afghanistan, and to provide shelter, physical and psychological care, food and education.
