Qatar is taking big steps to strengthen its food security, with clear goals set as part of the National Food Security Strategy 2030. The country wants to locally produce 30% of its red meat and 70% of its table eggs in the coming years.

Hamad Hadi Al-Hajri, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Municipality’s Food Security Department, recently shared these plans on Qatar TV. He mentioned that Qatar already fully meets its needs for fresh poultry and dairy products through local production. When it comes to vegetables, table eggs, and red meat, the country currently covers about 40%, 30%, and 15% of its needs respectively.

According to Al-Hajri, this progress hasn’t happened overnight. It’s the result of a strong, ongoing effort involving both government and private players working together. He explained that food security is treated as a national priority something that involves everyone from ministries and large companies to small farms, fishermen, and livestock breeders.

The strategy focuses on two main things: increasing local production and making sure Qatar has strong, reliable supply chains that can adapt to global challenges. To support this, the government has launched various initiatives like expanding greenhouse farming, supporting livestock breeding and fattening, and encouraging fish farming.

Importantly, Qatar is backing local producers with real support whether through infrastructure, incentives, or training so they can grow more and grow better. Al-Hajri stressed that empowering these producers is key to reducing dependence on imports and making sure the country is ready for any global food supply disruptions.

As Qatar looks ahead to 2030, the focus remains on sustainability, innovation, and partnerships all aimed at building a strong, self-reliant food system that can stand the test of time. The strategy also promotes healthier food habits, ensures safety standards, and takes climate change into account helping to shape a more secure and sustainable future for everyone in Qatar.
