Qatar's Call to Avoid Escalation in Taiwan to Maintain World Security and Stability

In their Friday editorials, Al-Raya and Al-Sharq newspapers highlighted Qatar's explicit call to avoid escalation in Taiwan to maintain world security and stability, and the country's firm commitment to the principles of international law.

The two newspapers also affirmed on the need to respect the principles of international law, including the principle of state sovereignty and friendly relations between them and Qatar's commitment to cooperate with all international partners, while remaining close to everyone in order to maintain global peace and security as one of the priorities of Qatar's foreign policy.

Al-Raya newspaper said that amid escalating tensions in one of East Asia's busiest waterways, and with the launch of major Chinese military exercises in the waters surrounding the island of Taiwan, in objection to the visit of Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to the island, Qatar has affirmed its firm commitment to the principles of international law as a consistent and principled position in its foreign policy.

It pointed out to the announcement of the State of Qatar that it is monitoring the latest developments in Taiwan, calling on all parties to avoid escalation and abide by the international legitimacy and the relevant United Nations resolutions, stressing the important and pivotal roles of the United States and China to preserve security and stability both regionally and internationally.

The newspaper noted the affirmation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement Thursday on the State of Qatar's firm position backing the 'One China' principle and the importance of respecting the principles of the international law including the principle of sovereignty of states and friendly ties among them.

The newspaper recalled the historical definition of Taiwan, saying that Taiwan is known in many authoritative international organizations such as the International Olympic Committee and the World Trade Organization (WTO) as Chinese Taipei. Before 1949, it was an integral part of Greater China, which is a founding member of the United Nations and one of the five permanent members of the Security Council. The political entity and holder of the right to membership were changed in 1971, pursuant to Resolution No. 2758 of the United Nations Assembly which called to "restore" the rights of the Peoples Republic of China as the only lawful representatives of the former political entity which was known as the United Republic of China before the outbreak of the civil war in 1949.

The newspaper stressed that the State of Qatar has affirmed in more than one position its firm commitment to everything that would enhance the security and stability of the world at all regional and international levels. It cooperates with all international partners while remaining close to everyone in order to maintain global peace and security as one of the priorities of Qatar's foreign policy.

Al-Raya newspaper pointed out that Qatar's priorities are embodied through a strategic partnership with countries that have great weight on the international scene, especially the United States of America, which is a firm strategic ally of the State of Qatar, and their partnership has achieved many remarkable successes, whether at the level of bilateral or multilateral cooperation. Qatar also has historical relations with China, and Doha and Beijing relations developed by raising them from cooperative relations to a strategic partnership in November 2014.

Al-Raya concluded its editorial by saying that the two countries cooperate in an innumerable package of sectors that benefit the two friendly countries, therefore, Qatar is keen to develop these relations in a way that achieves the common interests of all parties and enhances ways to establish international peace and security.

In turn, Al-Sharq newspaper affirmed in its editorial on Friday that the policy of the State of Qatar is based on supporting all international efforts aimed at finding solutions to conflicts through dialogue, achieving sustainable peace and development and improving the humanitarian situation in poor countries that are exhausted by conflicts in the region and abroad, in line with its policy to mitigate the effects of humanitarian crises and promote diplomatic solutions for the benefit of all peoples.

The newspaper pointed out that from this standpoint, the State of Qatar affirmed that it is monitoring the developments in Taiwan, calling on all parties to avoid escalation and abide by the international legitimacy and the relevant United Nations resolutions, stressing the important and pivotal roles of the United States and China to preserve security and stability both regionally and internationally.

The newspaper noted the important Qatari role in many files, the most prominent of which was the Afghan file, pointing out that Qatar reiterates its firm position on the necessity of relying on dialogue, avoiding escalation, and adhering to the gains of the Doha Agreement and committing to it for a better future for Afghanistan.
It pointed out to Qatar's call for the concerned parties to sit at the negotiating table, based on its keenness that Afghanistan should not be a haven for terrorist and extremist individuals and organizations, and seeking to support regional and international efforts in combating terrorism and its financing, and everything that would enhance international peace and security.

The newspaper concluded its editorial by saying that the State of Qatar is keen to deliver humanitarian aid and facilitate dialogue between all Afghan parties, urging the Afghan Interim Government to achieve the development and reform goals in the country, and ensuring the unity and sovereignty of Afghanistan and preserving the gains especially with regard to human rights, fundamental freedoms, the promotion of the role of women and the fight against terrorism.
