Qatar's Kahramaa Implements Cutting-Edge Technologies to Reduce Water Losses

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has successfully integrated state-of-the-art technologies to detect water leakages in transmission pipelines, resulting in a significant reduction of water losses to just 18 percent, according to a statement by Eng Abdulaziz Muhammad Al Qatabri, Head of the Water Control Center at Kahramaa.

The adoption of innovative solutions such as smart ball and helium gas for detecting underground leakages has notably improved the efficiency and performance of the water supply network. Al Qatabri highlighted this achievement, stating that the real loss of water in 2023 was less than 18 percent, a commendable rate compared to the global average.

He further emphasized that efforts are ongoing to further reduce water losses in the coming years. Additionally, Al Qatabri discussed the pivotal role played by the strategic Water Security Mega Reservoirs, contributing to an increase in Qatar's water reserve by over 2,400 million gallons. These reservoirs facilitate the transfer of water between different regions and enable routine maintenance of desalination plants.

The Water Security Mega Reservoirs operate remotely and are designed for future expansions to meet growing demand. Al Qatabri mentioned that water production in Qatar has reached 540 million gallons per day, with the highest recorded demand at 420 million gallons per day during the summer, resulting in a surplus of over 25 percent.

This surplus, Al Qatabri explained, will be utilized to meet the needs of the growing population and address emergencies. He assured that Kahramaa is committed to providing safe drinking water that adheres to global health specifications, with continuous monitoring of water quality through sensors installed at desalination plants, pumping stations, and reservoirs.

In terms of future plans, Al Qatabri revealed that Kahramaa intends to build a new desalination plant with a capacity of 100 million gallons, utilizing reverse osmosis technology and implementing smart water transmission networks.
