Road Accidents
Serious road accidents resulting in fatalities have decreased by more than 32% over the past two years, thanks to concerted efforts by authorities to enhance road safety and infrastructure.
Data from the National Planning Council (NPC) reveals that in the first four months of this year, 52 fatalities occurred in road accidents, compared to 77 deaths during the same period in 2022—a 32.4% decline. The Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Traffic has played a pivotal role in this improvement by promoting awareness and ensuring adherence to traffic regulations, including speed limits and seatbelt usage. Additionally, advancements in road infrastructure and regular vehicle inspections have contributed to these positive safety trends.
Between January and April this year, there were a total of 3,163 reported traffic accidents, with the majority being minor incidents. Specifically, 172 accidents were classified as major. Monthly breakdowns indicate 843 accidents in January, 754 in February, 804 in March, and 762 in April. Corresponding fatalities for these months were 17, 12, 13, and 10, respectively.
Comparatively, the same period last year recorded 3,041 accidents and 58 fatalities, including 179 major accidents. January 2023 saw 788 accidents, February had 668, March recorded 806, and April logged 779 incidents. In contrast, January-April 2022 reported 2,904 accidents and 77 deaths.
To enforce road safety regulations effectively, traffic police are utilizing surveillance cameras at roads and intersections nationwide to monitor seatbelt compliance and mobile phone usage violations.
