The founder of Family Food Centre Hyder Haji passes away

Family Food Centre announces with deep sadness the passing of Hyder Haji, its founder, who passed away quietly at the age of 90 in the early hours of July 21, 2025.  Hyder Haji, a long-time resident of Qatar, was well-known for his honesty, modesty, and unshakeable dedication to the welfare of the society.

Over the span of more than five decades in Qatar, Hyder Haji not only built a thriving business empire but also played a critical role in the development of the country’s expatriate community. In 1978, he established Family Food Centre, which has since grown into one of Qatar’s most trusted and respected retail brands. His business was rooted in values he held dear: honesty, service, and quality.

His entrepreneurial vision extended beyond Qatar with the founding of the Hyson Group in India, through which he contributed to various sectors outside of retail, reflecting his broad business acumen.

Beyond his role as a businessman, Hyder Haji was deeply committed to education and social service. He was a founding member and former President of MES Indian School, one of the first institutions to offer Indian curriculum education in Qatar.

In his ongoing effort to support his fellow Indian expatriates, he also co-founded the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), a vital organisation dedicated to providing assistance to those in distress.

His philanthropic efforts extended to Kerala, where he supported several humanitarian initiatives including the Ansari Orphanage and Al Islam Charitable Trust. Though rooted in India, these charitable ventures were fueled by his leadership and generosity from Qatar

Hyder Haji’s journey reflects a rare and powerful blend of entrepreneurial excellence and deep social consciousness. He will be remembered not only as a pioneer in organized retail in Qatar, but also as a visionary leader, philanthropist, and community builder whose legacy transcends generations.

His values and vision continue to inspire the institutions and lives he touched.

May Allah grant him the highest ranks in Jannah and provide strength and comfort to all who mourn his loss.
