Inauguration of new chargers for Electric Vehicles at The Pearl Island

United Development Company (UDC), the primary developer of The Pearl and Gewan Islands, has revealed the installation of seven advanced electric vehicle (EV) chargers on The Pearl Island.

Meanwhile, UDC has announced the arrival of the first-ever electric security patrol vehicles in Qatar. This is a big step towards fulfilling UDC's promise to sustainability, especially when it comes to eco-friendly transportation.

New Electric Vehicle Chargers

UDC has strategically installed a total of seven advanced EV chargers at The Pearl Island, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable transportation. These chargers, including six with capacities of up to 60 kWh and 120 kWh, and one as Qatar's fastest at 180 kWh, result from collaboration with Kahramaa's Tarsheed program and AUDI (Q-Auto). Operational in record time, these chargers highlight the swift evolution of EV technology, allowing vehicles to reach an 80% charge within 10-15 minutes.

The inauguration involved UDC, Kahramaa Tarsheed, Q-Auto, and Al Sraiya Security Services, reinforcing The Pearl and Gewan Islands' position as leading sustainable destinations in Qatar. Aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030 goals, these chargers support UDC's aim to promote EV adoption and create a cleaner environment.

The surge in vehicles visiting The Pearl Island, reaching approximately 20 million in 2023, underscores the popularity of EVs and the role of infrastructure in sustainable tourism. The introduction of electric security patrolling vehicles in collaboration with Al Sraiya Security Services further demonstrates The Pearl Island's commitment to eco-friendly practices and environmental responsibility.

This initiative aligns with UDC's Environmental and Sustainability Strategy for 2022–2026, targeting a minimum 12% reduction in CO2 emissions. The transition from conventional to fully electric vehicles is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by almost 7%, exceeding the annual target and showcasing UDC's dedication to a sustainable future.

First EV Vehicles for Security Patrolling

The Pearl Island has partnered with the prominent security service provider Al Sraiya Security Services (SSS) to introduce Qatar's first electric security patrolling vehicles. This collaborative effort represents a groundbreaking advancement in sustainable security practices, aligning with The Pearl Island's dedication to environmental responsibility.

Beyond its immediate impact on public safety, this initiative is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the island. By adopting eco-friendly security measures, The Pearl Island is actively fostering a safer and healthier living environment for its community.

This strategic decision is intricately integrated into UDC's comprehensive Environmental and Sustainability Strategy for the years 2022–2026, with a primary objective of reducing CO2 emissions by a minimum of 12%. The electrification strategy, addressing the pressing challenges of climate change, is actively implemented through initiatives such as the introduction of electric security vehicles.

In measurable terms, the shift from conventional petrol fuel-burning vehicles to fully electric alternatives for the HSSE fleet is anticipated to result in an almost 7% reduction in CO2 emissions for the entire UDC operation. This notable achievement not only exceeds the annual target of a 2.4% reduction in CO2 emissions set in UDC's Environmental and Sustainability Strategy but also underscores UDC's unwavering commitment to a sustainable future.

Sustainable Transportation

Upholding a comprehensive approach to sustainability, UDC is setting a precedent by transitioning 50% of its transportation fleet to electric alternatives. Earlier this year, UDC introduced a hybrid plug-in limousine service, achieving a notable 65% reduction in urban heat and greenhouse gas emissions, illustrating the company's commitment to opulent yet sustainable transportation.

Adding to its innovative green transportation portfolio, UDC operates the region's foremost fully electric water taxi within The Pearl Island, establishing a pioneering standard for sustainable mobility in the area.

Collectively, these endeavors signify a significant milestone in UDC's quest for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

The introduction of advanced EV chargers and the integration of electric security vehicles underscore UDC's resolve to diminish its carbon footprint and cultivate a cleaner, greener community at The Pearl Island. As UDC surpasses its annual CO2 reduction targets, this initiative serves as evidence of the company's steadfast dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
