An International Driving License, also known as an International Driver's Permit (IDP), is a document that permits individuals to drive a motor vehicle in over 150 countries when accompanied by a valid license from their country of residence.Â
Slightly larger than a standard passport, it includes translations of your existing driver's license in multiple languages, along with your photograph and other personal details.Â
It is a United Nations-regulated travel document designed to ensure safety and facilitate ease of travel.
This article outlines the process for Qatar residents and citizens to apply for an International Driving License in Qatar, enabling them to drive in other countries.
Any individual holding a valid Qatar Driving License is eligible to apply for an International Driving License in Qatar.
Residents of Qatar can apply directly at the Qatar Automobile and Touring Club (QATC), which is authorized to issue International Driving Permits and Carnet de passages (Trip Tickets) in Qatar.Â
Additionally, residents of Qatar can go to any driving school nearby with a valid Qatar driving license and apply for the IDL.Â
- Valid Qatari Driving License
- Original passport (may be required at some locations)
- Two passport-size photographs
- QR 150 (cash only at QATC)
The application process is simple and quick, taking only about five minutes.Â
Visit any of the aforementioned places with your driver's license, two passport-size photographs, and the fee (QR 150).Â
Your details will be printed onto the International Driving License, your photo affixed, and the document stamped.Â
Qatar has signed the United Nations convention that permits visitors with a valid International Driving Permit or International Driving License to rent a car and drive in Qatar for up to six months from the date of entry or until the license expires, whichever comes first.Â
However, Qatar residents are not allowed to drive using an International Driving License within the country.Â
Visitors must obtain an IDP in their home country before travelling to Qatar, as it cannot be renewed while the holder is in Qatar.
IDP holders are restricted to driving the vehicle categories for which they are licensed and are typically limited to rental vehicles due to insurance restrictions. After entering Qatar on a visit or business visa and applying for a resident permit or employment visa, your home license and international driving permits are no longer valid.
An international driving license ensures peace of mind while travelling, even if driving is not in your immediate plans, so make sure to get one before you set out on your travels!Â
