Kahramaa adds 64 million gallons of water to reservoirs in Q3

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) added 64 million gallons of water to Water Security Mega Reservoirs in order to meet the demand of water for household use and development purpose in the third quarter (Q3) of this year.

To enhance electricity and water supply networks, utility distributor, Kahramaa, also completed 28 projects and awarded 23 tenders in 2021.

“Kahramaa’s Water Networks Directorate commissioned additional 64 million gallons of water (4.5%) of Mega Reservoir capacity and 38.2km of pipelines ranging from 100mm to 1600mm in the 3rd quarter of 2021, fulfilling its responsibility to promote water security of Qatar,” Kahramaa has tweeted. 

Kahramaa is delivering all projects according to plans and strategies, as Technical Affairs Directorate completed 28 projects in 2021 and 23 tenders were awarded by Material Department in 3rd Quarter of 2021, said Kahramaa in another tweet.

In an earlier report, Kahramaa said it has achieved its strategic goals by consolidating the water security in the State, increasing the capacity of the strategic water reserve, and raising the capacity of the water system to enable it to cope with severe emergencies.

The storage capacity was increased from 1,000 to 2,400 million gallons, creating an increase of 140% in Kahramaa’s drinking water reserves. Biological Water Quality was high at 98.95% Year to Date (YTD), which is well above than World Health Organisation (WHO) guideline of 95% and almost matching Kahramaa’s ambitious target of 99%.

During the past years, Kahramaa succeeded in meeting the increasing demand for water in the country, despite an annual increase in water consumption amounting to an approximate 8% during the past twenty years. 

The highest consumption rate in 2020 equalled 438 million gallons per day, while the production capacity reached 476 million gallons per day, and it is estimated that the total production capacity will reach 536 million gallons per day in the second quarter of 2021 (an increase of 13% over 2020) which will ensure that future demands over water will be safely met up until 2025.

On the local level, the Permanent Committee for Water Resources proposed policies and strategies related to water resources, and approved plans, programmes and projects related to their management and development.  The Committee carried out important initiatives related to reinforcing water security and preserving underground water reservoirs in the country. 

In addition to these significant achievements, it also prepared the National Water Strategy, which brought forth many challenges and presented many solutions, initiatives and performance indicators, while adopting a long-term strategic view that extends to the year 2030, which is made possible through an integrated and sustainable management system of all water resources.
