The Ministry of Municipality (MoM) has initiated a project to enhance 'protected farms' and implement climate-smart agriculture, with the objective of transforming open farm areas into enclosed spaces to minimize evaporation, water loss, and address soil-related issues.

Part of the Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) between Qatar and South Korea, the project is being coordinated with the Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), Hyundai Research Institute, and Plant Farm company.

During the project's launch ceremony in Doha, Dr. Masoud Jarallah Al Marri, Director of the Food Security Department at the Ministry of Municipality, highlighted that the initiative is a collaborative effort with the Republic of Korea.

The primary goal is to evaluate potential climate changes impacting food production in Qatar and propose measures to mitigate these effects, emphasizing increased production efficiency and resource utilization through modern agricultural practices.

The project encompasses the development of crops with resistance to drought, high temperatures, and humidity. It includes activities to assess climate change's potential impact on food production and evaluate the state's preparedness.

Al Marri emphasized the potential benefit for Qatar from successful experiments in South Korea, with workshops planned for capacity-building and proposing suitable solutions.

He praised the institutions and companies involved in the project for providing researchers and experts with the latest technology information, facilitating the generation of recommendations for enhancing agricultural food production, reducing environmental impacts, and adapting to climate change.

Al Marri noted that Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) aims to share Korean technologies and finance projects, addressing challenges faced by countries. The Ministry selected this project to tackle agricultural challenges, climate change, and limited natural resources through modern techniques. The initiative will identify Qatar's agricultural challenges through discussions with stakeholders, including farmers and companies, to develop solutions and recommendations.
