Doha, Qatar: The Public Parks Department of the Ministry of Municipality is implementing a comprehensive plan to expand and improve Qatar’s green spaces, guided by principles of sustainability, functionality, and community benefit.

Mohammed Al-Sada, Director of the Public Parks Department, stated that the ministry follows a strategic, data-driven approach in selecting sites for parks and green areas to ensure they address the real needs of residents.

“The location of each park is determined by factors such as population density, urban planning priorities, and the future layout of streets and neighborhoods,” Al-Sada explained. Speaking to Qatar TV, he added: “We carefully evaluate what each area requires—whether it’s a park, a walkway, or another type of public space—so residents can truly benefit. Our goal extends beyond beautification; we aim to create spaces that enhance quality of life.”

Currently, Qatar features 146 public parks across its cities and neighborhoods, with additional projects underway. The department’s nurseries supply nearly all the trees, shrubs, and flowers used in these parks, forming a “complete and sustainable cycle,” Al-Sada noted.

“Almost all plants in our public parks come from our own nurseries. We oversee every step—from cultivation to planting—to ensure quality and reduce reliance on external sources,” he said.

Al-Sada highlighted that the ministry’s environmental strategy emphasizes sustainability, including the use of organic fertilizers and minimizing chemicals that could harm the ecosystem. “We are committed to achieving the highest standards of sustainability in plant care while maintaining environmental balance,” he added.

In line with modernization efforts, the department incorporates Green Building principles in the design and construction of new parks. This involves using eco-friendly and recycled materials, as well as durable alternatives suited to Qatar’s climate.

“For example, we no longer use untreated wooden benches that are easily affected by heat and humidity,” Al-Sada explained. “Instead, we opt for treated or sustainable materials that require less maintenance and last longer. This approach is applied to most construction materials in our public parks.”

Whenever possible, locally sourced materials are prioritized to support national sustainability goals and reduce environmental impact. Through these initiatives, the Ministry of Municipality continues to realize its vision of greener, healthier urban environments, offering modern recreational spaces that balance beauty, functionality, and environmental responsibility. With more parks planned in the coming years, Qatar’s cities are gradually transforming into greener, more sustainable communities, reflecting the nation’s commitment to improving urban life while preserving the natural environment.
