Washington, September 02 (QNA) - US-based company OpenAI announced Tuesday that it will launch a new mechanism allowing parents to monitor their children's activity on its AI tool, ChatGPT.
The move comes in response to allegations made by the parents of an American teenager in late August, accusing the chatbot of encouraging their son to commit suicide.
In a statement, the company said that starting next month, parents will be able to link their accounts to their teenagers’ accounts and control how ChatGPT responds to them through model-specific behavior guidelines.
OpenAI also clarified that parents will receive alerts if signs of acute distress are detected in their children’s conversations, and they will be able to manage account settings.
The company added that it will continue improving its models’ ability to recognize and respond to signs of psychological and emotional distress, noting that additional safety measures are expected to be implemented within the next 120 days.
Sensitive conversations will be redirected to more advanced reasoning models, such as GPT-5 Thinking, which are designed to systematically adhere to safety protocols and provide more thoughtful responses.Â
