Qatar Launches Trial Run for Electric Robotaxis Under MOT Supervision

Qatar is taking a bold step toward the future of smart mobility, with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) announcing its oversight of a pilot project for level-4 electric robotaxis in collaboration with Mowasalat (Karwa). The trial will focus on select tourist and service-centric routes across the country.

Karwa and MOT will begin by scanning and preparing these routes to ensure safety and readiness. The trial will be implemented in two distinct phases: the initial phase will involve supervised runs without passengers, while the second phase will see the robotaxis operating fully autonomously with passengers onboard.

The test runs are set to continue into the first quarter of 2026, allowing ample time to evaluate the vehicles’ performance, readiness, and the overall integration of this advanced technology into Qatar’s transport ecosystem. This includes assessing regulatory needs and developing the required infrastructure to support future deployment.

This pilot builds on the success of a previous autonomous electric bus trial and aligns with the broader goals of the MOT’s Autonomous Vehicle Strategy. Each robotaxi is equipped with a robust sensor suite, including six medium-to-long range cameras, four radar systems, and four lidar sensors—ensuring high-level detection, navigation, and safety in real-time traffic conditions.

The initiative highlights Qatar’s commitment to sustainable and intelligent public transport, leveraging cutting-edge innovations to transform urban mobility in the years ahead.
