Swedish authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the country’s deadliest mass shooting, as local media release details about the suspect.
The attacker, identified in reports as 35-year-old Rickard Andersson, was a former student at Risbergska adult educational centre in Orebro, a city 157 km (98 miles) west of Stockholm. The shooting, which occurred on Tuesday, claimed 11 lives, including the gunman, and left six others injured.
Nation in Mourning
The attack has shaken Sweden, with King Carl XVI Gustaf expressing condolences, saying, "All of Sweden is mourning." On Wednesday, he and Queen Silvia visited the site, while flags across the country were lowered to half-mast. A candlelit vigil was held outside the school as Orebro residents paid tribute to the victims.
Investigation and Suspect Details
Authorities have not officially confirmed Andersson as the suspect but stated he had been identified. Police suspect he died by suicide after an exchange of fire. While his motive remains unclear, investigators do not believe the attack was linked to gangs, ideology, or terrorism.
Local media reported that Andersson had no criminal record and had legally obtained his weapon, which is believed to be a hunting rifle or automatic firearm. He had previously attended the school but had not been enrolled since 2021.
Victims and Response
Authorities have not yet released details about the deceased. However, three women and two men remain in critical but stable condition, while another woman sustained minor injuries. Police are using fingerprints, DNA, and dental records to identify victims and are working with families during the process.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the attack a "dark day in Swedish history" and urged the nation to stand together in support of the victims and their families.
A Nation in Shock
As Sweden grapples with the tragedy, local police chief Roberto Eid Forest defended the delay in releasing information, citing the large school premises as a challenge in confirming casualties.
The Risbergska centre, where the attack occurred, provides Swedish language classes for immigrants and adult education for those over 20 who did not complete school.
With the investigation ongoing, police assure the public they will provide further updates on the shooter’s motive in due course.
