Qatar National Library (QNL) has introduced a new initiative called the ‘Library in Miniature,’ marking a major advancement in its ongoing efforts to promote literacy, improve accessibility, and bring its services closer to the community. The innovative book-borrowing station functions like a vending machine but is completely free for Library members. Users can borrow up to six books at a time, just as they would at the main Library.
The first station has been installed on the ground floor of Al Khor Mall near the main entrance, with more installations planned across Qatar.
"Our first book borrowing station represents a significant milestone in our mission to make knowledge more accessible to the wider community," said Katia Medawar, QNL’s Director of Research and Learning Services. "By extending our services beyond the Library’s physical location, we are creating more opportunities for readers to explore our collections and promoting a culture of literacy and lifelong learning throughout Qatar."
To borrow a book, Library members simply swipe their card or enter their membership number and password. They can then browse the station’s catalog and select the books they wish to borrow. The available titles will be regularly refreshed to offer users a dynamic and diverse reading experience.
This new service operates during the mall’s regular hours, providing added convenience for visitors. The initiative reflects QNL’s broader vision of building a more inclusive and culturally vibrant society and supports its mission to encourage lifelong learning while offering a faster and more accessible borrowing experience.
