Qatar Concludes 2026 Hawksbill Sea Turtle Nesting Season With Continued Conservation Efforts

Qatar’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has announced the conclusion of the 2026 hawksbill sea turtle nesting season, marking another year of conservation efforts aimed at protecting one of the region’s most vulnerable marine species.

The annual nesting season forms part of Qatar’s long-running Hawksbill Turtle Conservation Project, which focuses on protecting nesting sites, monitoring turtle activity and supporting the survival of hatchlings in their natural environment.

Protecting an endangered marine species

The hawksbill sea turtle is considered an endangered species, and Qatar has implemented long-term conservation programmes to safeguard its populations along the country’s northern coastline and islands.

Throughout the nesting season, environmental teams monitor nests, relocate those at risk from natural threats such as high tides, and track conditions including sand temperature to improve hatchling survival rates.

Fuwairit Beach plays key conservation role

Fuwairit Beach remains one of Qatar’s most important protected nesting areas for hawksbill turtles, serving as a dedicated location for conservation activities and hatchling release programmes.

The ministry has continued scientific monitoring and field operations to support successful nesting and the safe return of young turtles to the sea.

Decades of conservation work

Launched in 2003 in cooperation with national partners including QatarEnergy and Qatar University’s Environmental Science Center, the Hawksbill Turtle Conservation Project has become one of Qatar’s major biodiversity protection initiatives.

The programme includes nest protection, environmental monitoring, public awareness campaigns and efforts to preserve marine ecosystems for future generations.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change said the continued protection of hawksbill turtles reflects Qatar’s commitment to conserving natural resources and strengthening biodiversity protection.

Through scientific research, habitat preservation and public awareness, Qatar continues to support efforts to ensure the survival of hawksbill turtles and maintain the health of its marine environment.
