Qatar Participates in Conference on Peace and Sustainable Development in the Arab World

The State of Qatar participated today in the Conference on Tolerance, Peace and Sustainable Development in the Arab World, organized by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, in cooperation with the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, at the headquarters of the League's General Secretariat in Cairo.

The Qatari delegation to the conference was headed by Advisor at the Ministry of Culture Faleh Mubarak Al-Ajlan Al-Hajri.

The conference aims to shed light on the efforts of national institutions and international governmental and non-governmental organizations in combating hatred and intolerance, spreading a culture of tolerance, analyzing the legislative reality of anti-hate laws and examining visions for their development, in addition to monitoring the obstacles and challenges facing the fight against hatred and intolerance, and foreseeing a future vision for spreading a culture of tolerance and consolidating its principles for the sustainability of peace and development in the Arab world.

In a recorded speech, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stressed that the Arab world has for centuries been a living example of the juxtaposition of diverse ethnic, religious and cultural components, which are essential components in Arab societies.

Aboul Gheit pointed to the seriousness of the crises that afflicted the region, especially in the last decade, and the resulting collapse of national state institutions in a number of Arab countries, which gave way to chaos and the rule of the logic of force and extremism, as groups and forces with their own interests took advantage of these situations to dismantle states and divide societies on sectarian or ethnic basis.

He pointed out that extremism feeds mainly on the spread of hatred and the removal of tolerance as a supreme human value from the lexicon of peoples, and that hate speech has spread in an alarming manner, taking advantage of the ease provided by digital platforms in broadcasting news, noting that many of the people of this nation are fighting because of the absence of dialogue while others favor intolerance.

For her part, Ambassador Haifa Abu-Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector of the League of Arab States, stressed that the conference aims to shed light on many main axes, including combating hatred and spreading a culture of tolerance in religious discourse between reality and hope, and combating hatred in national legislation and its role in consolidating the principles of tolerance in society.

The conference, which will conclude its work tomorrow witnessed the presence of many religious and political figures and a number of ministers of culture, endowments and religious affairs in the member states, in addition to a number of Arab personalities.
