Tips on Turning Your Favorite Hobby into a Career
Even if you have a career you have been involved in for quite some time, there may come a time when you want to pursue something else. Perhaps your current career is less than fulfilling, you have grown bored with it, or it is swiftly becoming obsolete and won't be around much longer. No matter the reason, you may find yourself thinking about turning a hobby you have long loved into your new career. Here are some tips on how to do just that.
Choose Your Hobby
Most people have more than one hobby. You will need to pick which one you want to pursue to its fullest degree. If you are young, you may want to focus on which one you can profit from the most. However, if you are approaching your retirement years, you may want to consider which one will keep you just busy enough but still leave you time to do other things you enjoy.
Polish Your Skills
While you may have enjoyed your hobby for a long time, there may still be aspects that you need to polish up on before making it an actual profession. For instance, just because you love woodworking doesn't mean you will be an excellent businessman. In cases such as this, you will probably want to take some college classes. Take the time to think about what degree you may need. It is highly likely that you may want to pursue a shorter curriculum such as those that are offered with an Associate's degree, which traditionally takes two years to complete. This may seem like a long time when you already have a career but, in many cases, you can take college classes you have already taken and apply them to the degree, leaving only a handful of classes to take.
How to Pay for This Decision
If you are already involved in a career, you probably have a 401k or other retirement accounts set up. Under no circumstances should you tap these to help pay for your college. This is especially true if you decide to pursue a graduate degree, which carries more weight as far as respectability is concerned, but also carries a higher price tag. The safest and easiest option is to simply apply for a private student loan to pay for your schooling. A great thing about private student loans is that you pay nothing while in school, the re-payments generally begin 6 months after you graduate.
Have Realistic Expectations
Just as you didn't get to your current position immediately after graduating college the first time, don't expect to achieve immediate success right out of the starting gate this time. It may take several years to get to the level where you can retire and live off of your hobby. Of course, some may want to keep their current career to keep their benefits and insurance and simply pursue a second career based on their hobby.
Market Your New Business
After you have graduated and started your new career, it is time to market it at the level you want to achieve. Whether you want to become a giant in the industry or just want something to fall back on in your golden years is completely up to you.
