Two Dead, Hundreds Arrested Amid PSG Champions League Victory Celebrations in France
Celebrations across France following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) dramatic Champions League final win over Inter Milan turned tragic, with two fatalities and over 550 arrests reported, according to the French Interior Ministry on Sunday.
A 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in the town of Dax, located in the southwest of the country, during a public gathering marking PSG’s historic victory. In a separate incident, a woman lost her life after being struck by a car while riding a scooter in southwestern Paris.
Authorities reported a total of 559 arrests nationwide, with the majority — 491 individuals — detained in the capital. The ministry has not released further details regarding the causes of the unrest or the circumstances of the incidents, but security was significantly heightened across major French cities in anticipation of large gatherings.
PSG’s win, which marks a significant achievement in the club’s history, had prompted thousands of fans to flood the streets in celebration, but the night’s events have been overshadowed by the violence and tragic loss of life.
