US Presidential Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry
HE US Presidential Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry warned of what he described as the consequences of the worst climate crisis in the history of humankind, calling for adherence to the commitments made by countries around the world to avoid these consequences which threaten the entire world.
Speaking at a session in the framework of Doha Forum 2022, Kerry said: "We are not talking here about avoiding the climate crisis, but we are saying that the world has 8 years to make decisions to avoid the consequences of the worst climate crisis in the history of humankind." He stressed that these consequences can only be avoided if a 40 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 is committed.
He noted that there are 20 countries in the world, which are members of the G20, that cause up to 80 percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions. Only 12 of them are on the right track to reduce emissions, but the rest of the countries are not.
He said that many countries pledged to reduce emissions during successive climate summits, but the problem is not fulfilling the commitments, and this is already catastrophic, adding: "Today we have to manage two crises simultaneously: the climate crisis and the Ukraine crisis."
He stressed the importance of investing in the transition towards eco-friendly economies and projects, warning that the cost of damages caused by climate change is much greater than the money that countries will spend to make this transition.
