HE President of Qatar University Dr. Hassan bin Rashid Al Derham stated that the university has continued its progress in the international rankings of universities during the past two years thanks to the excellence in performance at various levels, and the provision of a distinct environment that stimulates innovation and creativity in teaching, learning, research and science.

His Excellency said in a speech during the induction meeting for new faculty members, which was held Wednesday, that the university has made excellence a goal, a way of life and a way of working.

This was one of the reasons for its rise to advanced positions in the world rankings of universities, and in its management of the difficult crises that the world has experienced during the past two years.

He added that the university was able to implement various programs and quickly adapt to the social distancing conditions imposed by the pandemic. This is a result of the advanced infrastructure and academic environment that stimulate creativity, research, teaching and learning, and provide all forms of financial, moral, research and technical support.

Qatar University jumped to rank 208 in the world this year, achieving an increase of 16 places over last year's edition, when it was in 224th place, according to the QS World Ranking.

In turn, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Omar Al Ansari said that Qatar University is one of the most important universities in the region and the world, as confirmed by international rankings of higher education institutions, adding that the ranking is not a goal in itself, but rather an affirmation of the efforts made by the university in the fields of teaching, research and infrastructure to be a leader in all fields and achieve its goals, vision and mission of being recognized regionally for its qualitative excellence in education and research.

Dr. Al Ansari pointed out that Qatar University is the national university of higher education in the State of Qatar, which offers high-quality academic programs for undergraduate and graduate education. It prepares competent graduates who can contribute effectively to making the future of their country and nation.

He affirmed that Qatar University includes a distinguished and diverse elite of faculty members who are committed to improving the education process.

He pointed out that the university currently includes 11 colleges and has 1,391 faculty members in the various disciplines offered by the university, and includes 50 scientific programs at the undergraduate level and 46 programs at the postgraduate level.

During the meeting, Dr. Al Ansari spoke about a set of core values of the university such as excellence, quality, professionalism, integrity, transparency and academic freedom, in addition to its interest in diversity, creativity, and social responsibility.

In her speech on the occasion, Vice President for Student Affairs at Qatar University Dr. Eiman Mustafawi said that the university currently has 28,500 students, including 26,000 at the undergraduate level and more than 2,000 students at the postgraduate level, of whom 68 percent are Qataris and the rest are of different nationalities, and this number is 71 percent of females.

She said that colleges, where the College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college at the university level, with 7,500 students, followed by the College of Engineering with 5,000 students, and then the College of Management and Economics.

Dr. Eiman also stated that the Student Affairs Sector employs 390 employees who provide services to students, as well as about 53 departments and specialized sections. These employees provide about 100 services and programs and deal with 88 student organizations Assistant Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies Dr. Nasser bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, spoke about the research sector, pointing out that the research centers of Qatar University, which are 17 centers.

Dr. Al Naimi pointed to the increase in the annual research production and research grants to Qatar University in recent years, in addition to the great leaps in graduate programs, the number of students enrolled, funding sources, and scientific publications in international scientific journals.

He affirmed that the university witnessed an increase and diversification in the number of scientific research centers, units and programs, an increase in the number of patents, and local and global partnerships, as well as its ambitious plans to develop national cadres and to promote and advance research policies.
